although we will walk through the whole design process step-by-step, it is always a good idea to start thinking about some basic design issues. here are some things to start thinking about:

• what is the theme or persona of your website you want to get across? is there something that you really want to incorporate on your website that says "this is me" or "this is my company"?
• what color scheme do you want your site to have?
• begin thinking about the overall style of your site. do you want to use graphics or photos? what kind of font? what other types of visual elements do you want present on the pages?
• how do you want your users to get around the site? where is the menu? do you have a preference as to where the navigation should be (top, bottom, right side, left side)?

my best advice is to start looking at as many sites as possible and take notes about things that stand out to you. what do you like? what don't you like? take lots of notes!
